In 1857, the town of Hastings was incorporated as a city and the people of Dakota County voted to designate Hastings as the county seat. In 1858, the Hastings City Council passed a city ordinance, which allowed for the creation of the “City Police Force”, which authorize the hiring of 2 police officers for the city of Hastings. Since that time, the police department has grown and currently has 31 officers who patrol 18 square miles.
In 2018, the Hastings Police Department joined other Minnesota agencies in the Pink Patch Project.
The HPD Pink Patch Project sells various pink merchandise with all proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society. To date, the Hastings has been able to donate close to $5,000 to American Cancer Society and participates in their annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.
